MS Dhoni has taken a significant step towards owning the rights to his iconic nickname, with the Indian Trademark Registry officially accepting and publishing his application to trademark the phrase ‘Captain Cool’.
The moniker, long associated with Dhoni for his composed demeanour under pressure, is now on course to be legally recognised as his intellectual property—provided no objections are raised within 120 days of the acceptance date, which was 16 June 2025.
Dhoni initially filed the application in June 2023, aiming to secure the trademark under categories related to sports training, coaching, and the provision of sports training facilities and services. However, the registry informed him that the name ‘Captain Cool’ had already been registered by Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Private Limited.
In response, Dhoni submitted a rectification petition challenging the existing registration. He accused the company of attempting to capitalise on his reputation and exploit the popularity of the term associated with his name.
“This is a case of bad faith registration on the part of the company, aimed at deceiving the public and unlawfully enriching themselves by trading on the name of a well-known individual,” Dhoni stated in his application. Following at least four hearings, the registry accepted his claim and proceeded to publish the trademark.
Dhoni, who turned out for Chennai Super Kings during IPL 2025, resumed captaincy midway through the season after Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined by injury. However, it proved to be a disappointing campaign, with CSK finishing bottom of the table for the first time in their 16-year history.
Earlier this month, Dhoni was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, marking another milestone in his storied career. In a statement, he said, “It is an honour to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame, which recognises the contributions of cricketers across generations and from all over the world. To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling. It is something that I will cherish forever.”
The former India captain, who will turn 44 in July, has not ruled out the possibility of returning for another IPL season.
