RMG factory workers of Interloop BD Limited blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway for more than two hours in protest after one of their fellow workers was killed in a road accident in Gazipur Tuesday morning.

Protesters claim that, at around 8am, a speeding truck ran into one of their colleagues at the Hurricane Bus Stand in Gachha, Gazipur, and fled the scene, leaving her dead on the spot.

Right after the incident, co-workers from the factory took to the streets in protest, bringing traffic to a standstill on both sides of the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway. The congestion created resulted in significant suffering for commuters, especially for office-goers.

The protests were brought under control by police and army personnel at around 11am, who eventually cleared the road for the free flow of traffic along the highway.

According to Gazipur city traffic Deputy Commissioner SM Ashraful Alam, the protesters agreed to disperse once they were assured that measures will be taken to address the death of their colleague.
