Bangladesh recorded one further dengue death and 870 new hospital admissions in the 24 hours to Monday morning, taking the total number of dengue cases this year to 24,848 and deaths to 71, according to Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
The latest figures show that 865 patients were discharged from hospitals during the same 24-hour period. Since 1 January, a total of 23,024 dengue patients have been discharged, while 1,753 patients remain hospitalised across the country.
Of the newly admitted patients, Dhaka division reported the highest number at 404, followed by Khulna with 153, Barishal with 102, and Chattogram with 90. Mymensingh recorded 51 new admissions, Rajshahi 57, Rangpur 13, and Sylhet none.
Khulna reported the only dengue death in the latest 24-hour period. The division has recorded 16 dengue deaths this year, the highest among the divisions. Dhaka has reported 33 deaths, Chattogram five, Barishal eight, Rajshahi one, Rangpur one, and Sylhet one, while Mymensingh has reported six deaths.
Dhaka city continued to account for a significant share of the latest cases, with the DGHS reporting 223 new admissions, including 165 in government and autonomous hospitals and 58 in private hospitals. Outside Dhaka city, 647 patients were admitted to government and private hospitals across the country during the same period.
The DGHS data show that of the 24,848 dengue patients hospitalised nationwide since the beginning of the year, males accounted for 61.7 per cent of cases and females 38.3 per cent.
Young adults remain among the most affected groups. The 21-25 age group recorded the highest number of cases at 3,496, followed by the 26-30 group with 3,486, and the 16-20 group with 3,316 cases.
Monthly data show a sharp rise in dengue cases during the monsoon period. Cases increased from 2,907 in May to 9,206 in June and 9,538 in July, while 1,081 cases had already been recorded in August as of 17 August.
