Dengue claims four more lives in Dhaka

Four more children and young adults have died from dengue in Dhaka, bringing the total death toll from the mosquito-borne disease to 114 this year.

According to the regular bulletin from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), these deaths occurred within 24 hours, up to 6 am on Saturday. All four victims were receiving treatment in hospitals within the Dhaka South City Corporation area.

Among the deceased, two young girls aged 4 and 7 passed away at Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital, while a 26-year-old woman died at Mugda Medical College, and a 15-year-old boy succumbed to the illness at Dhaka Medical College.

July recorded the highest number of dengue-related deaths this year, with 41 fatalities. As of August 23, 31 people had died from the mosquito borne disease, 19 in June, 10 in January 3 in February 7 in April, and 3 in May. No fatalities were reported in March.

In the last 24 hours, 247 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals, raising the total number of dengue-related hospitalizations this year to 28,202.

The health department regularly updates the public on the number of hospitalized dengue patients, but many people with the disease do not seek hospital treatment, making it difficult to determine the exact number of those affected nationwide.

July saw the highest number of hospital admissions, with 10,684 dengue patients, followed by 5,951 in June, 1,161 in January, 374 in February, 336 in March, 701 in April, and 1,773 in May. During the first 23 days of August, 7,222 people were hospitalized.

According to Saturday’s DGHS bulletin, 100 of the new admissions in the past 24 hours were from the two Dhaka city corporation areas. In addition, 31 patients were admitted in Dhaka Division, 3 in Mymensingh, 57 in Chattogram, and 56 in Barishal.

Currently, there are 1,307 dengue patients undergoing treatment in hospitals across the country, with 440 in Dhaka and 867 outside the capital.
