A Tk10 crore defamation lawsuit has been filed against Sarjis Alam, National Citizen Party (NCP) chief organiser for northern region, for allegedly “dragging BNP into false propaganda” regarding journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin’s murder in Gazipur.

On Tuesday, Basan Thana BNP President Tanvir Siraj filed the case at Gazipur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court. After hearing, Additional CMM Court-2 Judge Almagir Al Mamun directed the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the matter.

The plaintiff alleged that although Tuhin’s murder had no political connections, Sarjis Alam implicated BNP through Facebook posts, damaging the party’s reputation. The case states that Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Commissioner also found no political links to the killing.

On August 7, miscreants publicly hacked to death Tuhin, a journalist for Daily Protidiner Kagoj, at a Gazipur intersection. Police have arrested all eight accused in the case, with one suspect confessing to the murder during Monday’s interrogation.

Recently, press freedom organisation Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) demanded “swift and thorough investigation” into Tuhin’s killing. In a statement, CPJ called for bringing perpetrators to justice while ensuring journalists’ safety.
