Two more people critically injured in a road crash in Natore have died while undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, raising the death toll to eight.

Baraigram Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Sarwar Hossain said the microbus was heading to Dhaka from Natore when it collided head-on with an oncoming truck in the Tetulia Water Pump area. The impact crushed the microbus, killing five people on the spot. Two of the injured were taken to the Upazila Health Complex, where one later died.

“Police and fire service teams responded promptly to the scene and conducted rescue operations. Both vehicles have been seized. A long traffic jam had formed on the highway, which was later cleared by police,” OC Hossain added.

Earlier, six people were reported dead and at least two others injured in the collision between the truck and microbus on the Bonpara–Hatikumrul Highway in Baraigram upazila on Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred around 10:00 am in the Tormuj Pump area when the Dhaka-bound microbus from Meherpur attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with a cement-laden truck coming from the opposite direction.

The impact completely wrecked the microbus, killing five passengers, including the driver, on the spot.

The deceased microbus driver has been identified as Rubel Hossain (32) from Gangni upazila in Meherpur. The identities of the other victims—four women and one man—have not yet been confirmed.

Baraigram Highway Police Station OC Ismail Hossain confirmed that all the victims were passengers in the ill-fated microbus. One of the critically injured died after being taken to the Upazila Health Complex, while another was later transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.

Eyewitness Mizanur Rahman said the microbus was overtaking another vehicle when it crashed into the oncoming truck.

The truck has been seized, though the driver managed to flee. Natore Fire Service and police jointly carried out the rescue operation and transported the injured and the deceased to nearby hospitals.
