Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BGFCL) on Thursday signed an agreement with CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company Ltd. (CCDC) for the drilling of two deep exploration wells at Titas and Bakhrabad fields. The signing ceremony took place at Petrobangla’s boardroom in Dhaka, according to a press statement.

Under the agreement, BGFCL will oversee the drilling of two deep exploration wells—Titas-31 Deep (5,600 meters) and Bakhrabad-11 Deep (4,300 meters). The total estimated project cost is Tk 798 crore, with a loan from the Government of Bangladesh covering Tk 558.60 crore and BGFCL’s own funds contributing Tk 239.40 crore. The project is expected to be completed between July 2025 and December 2027.

The drilling project follows a re-evaluation of data from a 3D seismic survey conducted by BAPEX in 2011-2012 and later reassessed by BGP Inc. and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) in 2019-2020. The drilling will focus on underexplored overpressure zones beneath the Bhuban and Borail formations at both the Titas and Bakhrabad fields.

The wells are expected to be the first in Bangladesh to encounter high-pressure and high-temperature conditions, with reservoir pressures of approximately 15,000 psi and temperatures of 390°F. Upon successful completion, Titas-31 Deep is projected to contribute around 15 million cubic feet of gas per day, and Bakhrabad-11 Deep is expected to add 10 million cubic feet per day to the national grid.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Md. Rezanur Rahman, Additional Secretary of the Government of Bangladesh and Petrobangla Chairman, who attended as the chief guest. Representatives from CCDC, along with directors from Petrobangla, project directors, and managing directors from BGFCL and BAPEX, were also present. The agreement was signed by BGFCL Company Secretary Md. Mojahar Ali and CCDC CEO Li Xiaoming.

This initiative is part of BGFCL’s ongoing efforts to increase the country’s gas reserves and address future energy demands.
