Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt will miss the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign after undergoing back surgery.

The Dutch centre back has been out since November with a long-term injury. United confirmed on Friday that the surgery was successful.

The club said De Ligt worked hard during his recovery, but doctors decided surgery was the best option.

He is now expected to miss the rest of the year and may only return in the early part of next season.

De Ligt had started the season strongly before his setback. He played every minute of Manchester United’s first 13 Premier League matches before the injury stopped him.

The former Juventus and Bayern Munich defender said he did everything possible to avoid surgery.

“Since November I have done everything, pushing myself in every session and exploring every option, to get back to doing what I love, playing football,” De Ligt said.

He also thanked fans and supporters for standing by him during a hard period.

“I am grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout a difficult period in my career.”

Despite the setback, De Ligt said he remains focused on returning stronger.

“I remain as determined as ever to represent Manchester United and play in front of our incredible supporters as soon as possible.”
