Police arrested Ashraf Siddiquee Bitu, the former assistant press secretary to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. They also arrested former MP Shamima Akter Khanam known as Shamima Shahriar.
Deputy Commissioner of DMP, Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed that a team of Detective Branch (DB) arrested them from Zigatola in the capital on Saturday.
He stated that multiple cases have been filed against them, including charges of murder and attempted murder in connection with the anti-discrimination student movement. Legal proceedings against them are currently underway.
Ashraf Siddiquee Bitu was first appointed as assistant press secretary in the Press Wing of the Prime Minister’s Office in 2017. Later, his contract was extended for another three years. However, his contractual appointment was terminated on July 21, 2022.
Bitu, a native of Mymensingh, was removed from the Prime Minister’s Office, sparking widespread discussion at the time.
Shamima Akter Khanam, an Awami League politician better known as Shamima Shahriar, was a member of parliament elected from the reserved women’s seat-21 in the 11th National Parliament. Most recently, she served as the Central Human Resources Affairs secretary of Krishak League.
