Police detained eleven Awami League leaders and activists during an unauthorised procession in Dhaka’s Gulistan area on Sunday evening, despite a government-imposed ban on all such activities. The detainees were reportedly preparing to march when members of the Detective Branch (DB) intercepted them.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed the arrests but stated further details would be disclosed later. The incident occurred as AL members gathered at multiple locations across the capital in violation of the executive order prohibiting public assemblies.
Earlier last week, an ordinance was promulgated prohibiting any form of publicity — including press statements, social media content, or public gatherings — in support of any individual or entity charged under the anti-terror law. This was followed by the Council of Advisers approving the ban on all Awami League activities, including its online presence, under the Anti-Terrorism Act, until completion of the ICT trials.
The move appears to be directed at the Awami League, whose activities have already been banned by the interim government, with a gazette notification expected on Monday.
Authorities emphasised the enforcement of the standing restrictions on political activities, though the specific charges against the detained AL members remain unspecified.
The DMP maintained that legal procedures are being followed regarding the detainees.
