Liam Dawson has been called up to the England squad for the fourth Test against India, replacing the injured Shoaib Bashir. The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed the change on Tuesday, with Dawson joining the 14-player squad for the penultimate match in the five-match series.
Bashir, 21, sustained a fracture to his non-bowling left hand while attempting a low catch during his own bowling in the third Test at Lord’s on Saturday. The injury will require surgery, and the young spinner is set to miss the remainder of the series.
Despite the injury, Bashir played a crucial role in England’s thrilling 22-run victory over India, returning to bowl on Monday and taking the final wicket to seal a dramatic win. The result put England 2-1 up in the series, with the fourth Test set to begin in Manchester on July 23.
Dawson, 35, has not featured in a Test match since July 2017, though he has remained active in white-ball cricket. The left-arm spinner most recently played for England during the T20 series against the West Indies last month. He has also featured in Hampshire’s T20 Blast campaign, taking five wickets in five appearances this month.
The England squad for the fourth Test is as follows:
Ben Stokes (Captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.
