The Cricket Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) has confirmed that it will hold its long-awaited election on 4 September, marking the first such vote in 15 years. The announcement came following a meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium premises in Mirpur on Monday.

For the first time, all current and former national team players, along with active first-class cricketers, will have voting rights in the election.

Convener Saleem Sahed stated that the decision to hold elections was finalised during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in July. It was also agreed that life membership would be made available for Tk 1 lakh to anyone registered under the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) from 1975 onwards.

An election commission has been formed, with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) director Iftekhar Ahmed Mithu appointed as chairman. Former cricketers Nasir Ahmed Nasu and Habibul Bashar have been named as committee members.

CWAB also expressed gratitude to the National Sports Council (NSC) for allotting office space at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. Cricketers including Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque, and Mohammad Mithun were present at the press briefing.

“This is the first time in 15 or even 20–30 years that players are stepping forward to be involved directly with CWAB,” said Mithun. “Previously, we relied on those in charge to represent us, but we suffered because of a lack of representation. Now we want leadership that reflects the voices and rights of current players.”

The upcoming election is expected to usher in a new era of player involvement in CWAB affairs, aiming to better represent the interests and welfare of Bangladesh’s cricketing community.
