Authorities in Gopalganj have relaxed the ongoing curfew for 14 hours on Saturday, allowing public movement from 6am to 8pm.

Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Mohammad Kamruzzaman announced the decision late on Friday night.

The curfew was imposed after violent clashes broke out on Wednesday during a rally organised by the National Citizens Party (NCP). Officials said the temporary relaxation aims to ease public suffering while maintaining security.

The violence erupted as NCP supporters attempted to rally in protest against recent political crackdowns, with tensions escalating between rival groups in the area. In the aftermath, law enforcement imposed an indefinite curfew to restore order and prevent further unrest.

Wednesday’s violence drew condemnation from rights bodies, with calls for accountability and restraint from security forces. Law enforcers will remain deployed, and authorities will review the situation before making further decisions, according to officials.
