Journalists at a discussion on Saturday said that to tackle the challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI), it is essential to foster greater creativity in the media.

Addressing a discussion organised by the media and development organisation Somosti on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, they stated that AI should not be seen as an obstacle but rather as an opportunity.

To uphold the excellence of journalism in the age of AI, institutional training, ethical standards, and the practice of objective journalism can provide a sustainable path forward, they added.

Media and development experts advised journalists to enhance their technical skills and prepare adequately for this evolving landscape.

The speakers said that the core strength of journalism lies in information gathering, analysis, and amplifying people’s voices. In this regard, it is humans—not machines—who are central. Therefore, the ethics, objectivity, and on-the-ground experience of journalists will continue to set them apart.

Media experts emphasised that journalists must master new trends in technical skills and content presentation. At the same time, it is crucial to build a professional outlook while upholding truthfulness.

The speakers added: When journalists face threats for exposing the truth, it is the responsibility of civil society and concerned stakeholders to stand by them.

They expressed hope that the state will play a positive role in protecting democracy and freedom of expression.

World Press Freedom Day has been observed since 1997, following the declaration by UNESCO.
