The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) has strongly condemned the deadly attacks on the National Citizens Party (NCP) rally in Gopalganj, calling on the government to take full responsibility for the ensuing unrest.

CPB President Mohammad Shah Alam and General Secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince expressed the party’s outrage over the violence during the rally, resulting in several fatalities, which was targeted by what they described as “terrorists of the defeated fascist force Awami League.”

In a statement issued following the attack, the CPB leaders condemned the assault on the NCP rally and law enforcement vehicles, including those carrying the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO).

They accused the government of failing to ensure the safety and security of the rally participants. “It is the government’s responsibility to provide security of political parties, but in this case, they have utterly failed,” the statement read.

The CPB also expressed concerns over the killing of several individuals by security forces during the incident, which they called “extrajudicial killings.”

The leaders linked the violence to the broader political context, noting that such incidents were “completely unexpected after the mass uprising of 2024” and were “contrary to the wishes” of the movement that sought to restore democratic governance.

“These attacks and the government’s inability to prevent them reflect a failure to uphold democracy and the rule of law,” the CPB stated.

They further asserted that the current interim government must take full responsibility for the “chaotic situation” in Gopalganj and cautioned that its continued irresponsibility could undermine the country’s democratic trajectory.

In their statement, the CPB leaders demanded that those responsible for the killings and attacks be brought to justice. They also urged the government to ensure the safety and security of citizens and their property.

Finally, the CPB appealed to all political parties to act responsibly and called on the people of Bangladesh to remain vigilant against the provocations and conspiracies of “defeated fascist and reactionary forces.”
