Magura court has scheduled May 17 to announce the verdict in the widely-discussed rape and murder case of eight-year-old Asiya, who was brutally killed in March last year.
Judge Md Zahid Hasan of the Magura Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal fixed the date on Tuesday after hearing final arguments from both prosecution and defence.
Advocate Monirul Islam Mokul, plaintiff’s counsel, confirmed that arguments were presented in the presence of the accused. He expressed optimism that the court would deliver justice for the young victim.
According to case details, a total of 29 witnesses provided testimony and seven items of evidence were submitted during trial proceedings.
The tragic incident occurred on the night of March 5, 2024, while Asiya was staying at her sister’s in-laws’ residence in Nijnanduali village under Sadar upazila in Magura. She had gone to bed with her sister, but she was found missing around midnight.
The case sparked widespread outrage and drew attention to growing concerns around child safety and justice for victims of sexual violence in the country.
