A court has directed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to probe a case against Jatiya Party (JaPa) Chairman GM Quader, Secretary General Mujibul Haque Chunnu, and eight others over allegations of nomination trade, extortion, and robbery.

On Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Mia issued the order. Court Bench Assistant Zahid Hasan confirmed the development.

The case was filed on May 18 by former JaPa member and human rights activist Nazmin Sultana Tuli. After recording the plaintiff’s statement, the court scheduled May 26 for the order.

The other accused include: GM Quader’s wife Sharifa Quader, JaPa Presidium Member and Additional Secretary General Rezaul Islam Bhuiyan, Former DB Police Chief Harun-or-Rashid, JaPa Central Committee member Newaz Ali Bhuiyan, former Uttara Detective Branch DC Akram, Former Uttara DB ADC Nazmul, Airport Zonal Team SI Pabitra Sarkar, and JaPa Dhaka Metropolitan North member Saidul Islam.

The case alleges that with GM Quader’s backing, the accused engaged in nomination trade during the 2024 dummy elections. They allegedly demanded Tk50 lakh from Nazmin Sultana Tuli, promising her a nomination.

When Tuli protested during a central committee meeting, tensions escalated, deepening internal party conflicts. In retaliation, on October 10, 2023, at 8:30pm, 40-50 unidentified men — reportedly aided by corrupt former police officials — reportedly broke into Tuli’s residence.

They allegedly looted furniture, 7 bhori of gold ornaments, Tk3.65 lakh in cash, important documents, mobile phones, and laptops. Tuli claims she received death threats when preparing to hold a press conference about the incident.
