A Dhaka court has imposed travel bans on former DGFI director general Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, his wife Nigar Sultana, and two others amid corruption investigations by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The graft body is probing into alleged illicit wealth accumulation by the individuals. ACC Deputy Director (Public Relation) Md Akterul Islam confirmed the matter to reporters.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib issued the order Thursday following separate ACC petitions.T
The other restricted individuals include Khondakar Abul Kaiyum, brother-in-law of ex- director general of National Security Intelligence (NSI) Maj Gen (retd) Zobayer, and NBR member Abu Saeed Md Mustaque.
ACC Director SMM Akhtar Hamid Bhuiyan’s petition alleged Mamun Khaled amassed unexplained assets through stock market manipulation and power abuse during his 2007-2013 intelligence tenure. Investigators claimed the couple attempted to flee abroad, potentially jeopardising the probe.
“The accused acquired properties under family members’ names through corrupt means,” stated ACC prosecutor MA Salauddin, presenting evidence of attempted emigration.
The court directed the concerned authorities to enforce the ban immediately which will prevent all accused from exiting Bangladesh until the corruption inquiry concludes.
