Five people have died after reportedly consuming homemade country liquor in the Boyra Sherer Mor area of Khulna city. The incident occurred Saturday afternoon.
All five were taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition but were declared dead shortly after arrival. Hospital records list “unknown toxic reaction” as the cause of death. Police, however, attribute the deaths to locally brewed liquor.
The deceased have been identified as: Babu, 50, son of Abdur Rob from Boyra Sherer Mor, Sonadanga; Sabu, 60, son of Abdus Samad from Boyra Madhyapara, Khalishpur; Gautam Kumar Biswas, 47, son of Kalipad from Khalishpur Junction Road; Azibur, 59, from near Mela Math in Sonadanga; and Tota, 60, of Khalishpur, associated with Khulna Public College. Tota’s body was reportedly taken to his village home in Barishal.
Hospital admission records show the five were brought into the emergency unit around 4:15pm on Saturday. All of them died on the way to the medicine ward. Family members quickly took the bodies home without waiting for autopsies.
Sub-inspector Abdul Hai of Sonadanga Police Station, who was present at the scene, said that six individuals had consumed a form of homemade alcohol prepared using various substances.
Five died, and the sixth has been admitted to a specialised hospital. Since no autopsies were conducted, the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed.
