Mushfiq Uddin Tagor, a convict in the 2002 murder of BUET student Sabekun Nahar Sony, was arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) yesterday from Dhaka’s Azimpur area.
RAB confirmed Tagor’s arrest in a brief statement and announced that further details would be disclosed at a press conference later today.
Sony, a second-year student of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology’s (BUET) Chemical Engineering Department, was killed in a factional clash between two rival groups of the BNP-backed student body, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), in June 2002. During the clash, which involved gunfire on the BUET campus, Sony was tragically caught in the crossfire.
Tagor is one of five individuals convicted in the case. In March 2006, the High Court sentenced three of the convicts, including Tagor, to life imprisonment. However, the verdict had remained unexecuted as three convicts, including Mokammel Hayat Khan Muki and Nurul Islam Sagor, had been absconding.
