Shahab Uddin, a controversial leader from Companiganj upazila, has been arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-9 for his alleged involvement in the Sada Pathor loot case in Volaganj, Sylhet. He was detained from the Kumarpara area on Saturday night.
According to RAB-9 Media Officer (Additional SP) Shahidul Islam Sohag, Shahab Uddin had been previously sued in connection with the Sada Pathor loot and extortion cases at Companiganj police station. Additionally, he faces seven other charges at various police stations. Following his arrest, he was handed over to Kotwali police station in Sylhet.
The allegations against Shahab Uddin surfaced on the night of August 11, which led to his suspension from all BNP positions through a press release signed by Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi. The release cited “clear allegations of activities contrary to BNP’s principles,” including extortion and land grabbing. The release also appointed Haji Abdul Mannan, vice-president of Companiganj BNP, as the acting president.
In August, further accusations emerged alleging Shahab Uddin’s illegal occupation of nearly 150 acres of government land. In response, the district BNP issued him a show-cause notice. A three-member investigation committee, led by vice-president Ashiq Uddin, was formed to probe the various allegations, including extortion. Despite these actions, Shahab Uddin continued his controversial activities, leading to the loss of his party posts and his eventual arrest.
