Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasib Aziz has verbally ordered all patrol teams to open fire in self-defence if anyone draws a weapon in front of them or during an operation.

The directive was issued over wireless late Tuesday night after Sub-Inspector (SI) Abu Sayeed, also known as Rana, was injured in an attack by miscreants at Ishan Mistrir Ghat in the city.

According to police, on Monday night SI Rana and two other officers went to Saltgola under Bandar police station after receiving information that ruling Awami League activists were staging a sudden procession.

While searching a house, miscreants attacked the team with sharp weapons, leaving Rana critically injured in the head. Subsequent joint force raids in the area led to the arrest of 18 people and the recovery of machetes, knives and other sharp weapons.

In his instruction, Hasib Aziz said CMP members will now carry firearms under the same authorisation they had before 5 August 2024.
