On Monday evening in Ukhiya, Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, a clash occurred between members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local residents. Approximately 15 people were injured.
According to local sources, tensions began on Monday following the detention of a fisherman named Jahangir Alam (40). Locals claim that he was detained after an argument with BGB members over fishing in the Naf River. When locals protested, BGB members allegedly beat them with batons and eventually fired blank rounds to disperse the crowd. As a result of the clash, residents blocked roads in the Hnila Moulvibazar area of Teknaf.
On the other hand, BGB claimed that Jahangir is a drug dealer. They said that when he was being detained, his accomplices attacked them.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Jasim Uddin, commander of the Ukhiya battalion (64 BGB), told reporters: “On May 28, drug trafficker Jahangir Alam and 40–50 others obstructed a special operation by the Hnila BOP patrol team. A case was filed at Teknaf Model Police Station in connection with this incident.”
He added, “On Monday afternoon, Jahangir—the main accused in that case—was detained in an operation led by the commander of the Kharangkhali BOP. At that time, some of his associates gathered and blocked the road. Additional BGB personnel have been deployed in the area. The situation is currently under control.”
Jasim Uddin stated that the detained Jahangir will be handed over to the Teknaf Model Police Station.
