A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed a man named Rafiqul Islam on a two-day remand in connection with the deaths of three family members at a hotel in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam issued the remand order after Sub-Inspector Jalal Uddin of Ramna Police Station, the investigating officer in the case, produced the accused in court and sought a seven-day remand for questioning.
Defense lawyer Muhammad Alamgir Hossain submitted a bail petition on behalf of the accused.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted a two-day remand, said SI Jalal.
Earlier in the day, Monir’s elder brother Italy expatriate Nurul Amin Manik filed the case with the Ramna Police Station accusing unidentified individuals of murder.
According to a case statement, Monir, who had been living in Saudi Arabia, returned to his village to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha.
During his time abroad, Monir reportedly purchased land and houses in various areas around Dhaka and his home village. The transactions were handled by a distant uncle of Monir named Rafiqul, who was entrusted with managing the properties.
Following Monir’s return, a dispute allegedly broke out between him and Rafiqul over ownership of the properties and financial matters.
In his statement, plaintiff Nurul alleged that his brother’s death was the result of a premeditated act. “Based on what I’ve learned from relatives, I believe that unknown individuals planned the murders in advance—either by mixing poison or a toxic substance into their food while they were staying at the hotel, or through some other means,” he said.
On Sunday, Monir, along with his wife Nasrin Akhter Swapna and their son, Naeem Hossain Arafat, traveled from their village to Dhaka to seek medical treatment for his son, who had physical disabilities.
According to the case statement, the family arrived in the capital on June 28 and checked into Room 103 of the Sweet Sleep Residential Hotel in Moghbazar after being unable to secure a doctor’s appointment at SPRC Hospital. They were accompanied by Md Rafiqul Islam.
Monir and his family consumed food brought by Rafiqul Islam before going to bed. Later that night, they began vomiting and were rushed to Ad-Din Hospital, where a doctor pronounced them dead.
