The two city corporations of Dhaka — Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) — have announced their commitment to removing sacrificial animal waste on the same day during Eid-ul-Adha.
DSCC Administrator Shahjahan Mia stated that waste management operations will begin on the afternoon of Eid day. “We are fully prepared to begin our waste clearance operations from the afternoon of Eid. Our commitment is to clear all Qurbani waste within 12 hours,” he said after inspecting the National Eidgah on Thursday morning.
He added that around 10,000 sanitation workers will be deployed to manage the waste and that a sufficient number of city corporation vehicles are ready for the operation. “We have also submitted requisitions to other government agencies to provide additional vehicles if needed,” he added.
Similarly, DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz assured that the Qurbani waste generated during Eid will be removed on the same day to keep the city clean. Speaking during his visit to the Aminbazar landfill site on Wednesday, he said around 10,000 workers will participate in a three-day intensive waste management program.
The DNCC estimates that around 20,000 tonnes of waste will be generated this Eid. To handle this massive operation, 224 dump trucks, 381 pickup vans, and 24 payloaders will be mobilized. Additionally, the DNCC has distributed 1.25 million polythene bags, 2,500 sacks of bleaching powder, and 4,000 cans of Savlon to ensure cleanliness.
To further promote environmentally friendly waste management practices, the DNCC has also dug two trenches at the Aminbazar landfill for the proper disposal of sacrificial waste.
The city administrations have urged residents to cooperate by disposing of waste at designated collection points and using the provided cleaning materials.
