Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic ‘The Odyssey’ is already generating major buzz a year before its release.
In a bold move, tickets for opening weekend Imax 70mm screenings went on sale on July 17 and quickly sold out, with scalpers reselling for over $200.
The film, starring Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland and Lupita Nyong’o, is set for release on July 17, 2026.
This strategy, while unconventional, taps into Nolan’s proven ability to turn movies into cinematic events. Experts suggest it’s a response to shifting audience habits, dwindling box office returns, and competition from streaming platforms. “Studios need new ways to make people care,” says Sanjay Singh, founder of Nukhu.
The move also builds on the recent success of Imax 70mm screenings, such as Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. But critics say such rollouts are only viable for directors with Nolan’s stature. Access is also a concern as only 16 US cinemas are equipped for 70mm Imax and tickets are pricey — potentially excluding many viewers. Some Nolan fans have even resorted to calling it a ‘marketing stunt’.
