Nobel Laureate and Chief Adviser to the Government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Bangladesh women’s football team following their historic qualification for the second round of the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Dr Yunus praised the players for their determination, resilience and hard work, qualities he said represent the spirit of the nation. The team secured their place in the next round with a commanding 7–0 victory over higher-ranked Bahrain in Yangon, Myanmar. The result has captured the imagination of football fans across the country.
“This win is not only about scoring goals,” Dr Yunus wrote. “It is a reflection of our daughters’ strength, discipline and tireless effort. Their performance stands as proof of their dedication and preparation.”
He expressed his belief that the team’s success would inspire a new generation of female athletes in Bangladesh while also enhancing the country’s standing on the international stage.
This achievement marks the first time Bangladesh has progressed beyond the group stage in any AFC Women’s Asian Cup campaign. Dr Yunus, who has long supported youth development through sport, urged the team to remain focused as they aim for greater heights.
“May the honour and dignity of Bangladesh continue to grow,” he concluded.
