Chelsea will donate part of their Club World Cup player bonuses to the families of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, following the tragic deaths of the Portuguese brothers in a car accident.
The west London side lifted the trophy at FIFA’s newly expanded tournament in July, beating Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Their triumph earned them around $114.6m (£84.4m).
From this, the club set aside $15.5m (£11.4m) to be shared equally among the squad who featured under manager Enzo Maresca during the tournament. In a joint decision between the club and players, an equal payment from this fund will also be made to the family of Jota and Silva.
Each player’s share exceeds $500,000 before currency conversion, taxes, and other employment-related costs.
Liverpool forward Jota, who scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the club, and his brother Silva, a player for Portuguese side Penafiel, died in a road accident in Zamora, Spain, on 3 July — just 10 days before Chelsea’s Club World Cup final victory.
Liverpool have since announced a series of tributes to honour Jota’s memory. These include a memorial sculpture at Anfield, a ‘Forever 20’ emblem on shirts and stadium jackets for the 2025-26 season, and the permanent retirement of the No. 20 shirt across all levels of the club. The LFC Foundation will also launch a grassroots football programme in his name.
A special fan mosaic and a minute’s silence will be held ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday.
