Chelsea were frustrated at Stamford Bridge as they played out a scrappy 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace in the Premier League on 17 august.
The visitors thought they had struck early when Eberechi Eze found the net in the 13th minute, but the goal was overturned after referee Darren England reviewed the pitchside monitor. Palace captain Marc Guehi was judged to have shoved Moises Caicedo while standing too close to Chelsea’s defensive wall as Eze took his free kick.
Chelsea, playing their first competitive match since lifting the Club World Cup last month, struggled to impose themselves on the FA Cup holders in the south-west London sunshine.
Manager Enzo Maresca handed starts to several of the club’s youthful summer signings, including Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens. But it was 18-year-old Brazilian substitute Estevao Willian who provided the brightest spark, catching the eye with his pace and direct play down the right flank.
