After collaborating with Mosharraf Karim on two consecutive films, renowned Bengali director, playwright and politician Bratya Basu has selected Chanchal Chowdhury to lead his upcoming movie ‘Taan’. The film is set to begin shooting after Durga Puja, according to Anandabazar Online.

Bratya’s previous films, ‘Dictionary’ and ‘Hubba’ — both featuring Mosharraf Karim — received praise for their fresh exploration of human complexity.

Although the director initially hinted that Mosharraf would return for his next project, the lead role has now passed to Chanchal, who continues to gain acclaim in both Bangladesh and India with a series of powerful performances.

Taan is adapted from a story by legendary Bengali writer Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. It centres on an elderly man who is unexpectedly reunited with a long-lost lover, upending his family life. The emotional consequences of her return introduce layers of drama, tension and reflection.

Veteran actor Loknath Dey will play the elderly protagonist, with Seema Biswas, famed for her role in Bandit Queen — portraying the former lover.

Chanchal is cast as Loknath Dey’s character’s son, while Indian politician Kunal Ghosh is expected to appear in a supporting role.

Scriptwriting, casting and look tests are currently underway, with an official announcement and character visuals anticipated soon.

Meanwhile, Chanchal is preparing for ‘Tridhara’, directed by Amitabh Bhattacharjee. This relationship drama will mark his first on-screen collaboration with acclaimed actress Rituparna Sengupta, alongside Kaushik Ganguly.

The film explores the intertwined lives and emotions of three individuals and is expected to commence filming later this year.
