Chanchal Mahmood, a trailblasing figure in Bangladeshi fashion photography and a respected cine-journalist, passed away on Friday at Labaid Hospital in Dhaka. He was 63.
According to media sources, he had been placed on life support following a heart attack. Mahmood had long battled chronic health issues, including diabetes and previous cardiac complications.
Over a career spanning four decades, Chanchal Mahmood became a defining force in shaping the visual language of fashion and media photography in Bangladesh. Widely regarded as a pioneer of model and fashion photography in the country, he introduced stylistic innovations and professional standards that transformed the industry.
His work extended beyond the camera lens.
Through his institution, Chanchal Mahmood Photography, he mentored a generation of young photographers and journalists, advocating for ethical and professional excellence in the fields of fashion and film journalism.
Mahmood was known not only for his artistry but also for his generous spirit, having offered many prominent models and photographers their earliest opportunities in the industry.
He is survived by his wife, family, friends as well as many students and admirers whose lives and careers he touched.
His passing leaves a void in the creative landscape of Bangladesh. Funeral and burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family shortly.
