Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMA Nasir Uddin met with the Caretaker Government’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus in a courtesy visit on Thursday afternoon at the state guesthouse Jamuna.
A source from the CA’s office confirmed that the two held a private meeting. The details of their discussion were not disclosed, though it is reasonable to assume that election-related matters were discussed.
Earlier, on June 13 in London, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman held a meeting with the chief adviser, after which a joint statement was issued.
During that meeting, Yunus had mentioned that if all preparations were completed, elections could potentially be held before the holy month of Ramadan in 2026 (early February). However, sufficient progress on reforms and judicial matters would need to be achieved by then.
Meanwhile, several political parties have been demanding local government elections—particularly city corporation polls—before the national elections. Against this backdrop, the CEC met with the chief adviser.
Notably, following the London meeting between the chief adviser and the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami expressed strong disapproval and boycotted a National Consensus Commission meeting in protest.
