Election commissioner Abul Fazal Muhammad Sanaullah on Wednesday said that candidacy cancellation for serious offences will be added to the electoral code of conduct, and the use of posters will not be allowed in the upcoming national election.
The commissioner made the remarks after the seventh commission meeting held at the Election Commission headquarters in Dhaka.
The meeting, chaired by chief election commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, started at 11:00am and focused on two major issues — the “Code of Conduct for Political Parties and Candidates, 2025” and the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies.
“We have completed the discussion on the electoral code of conduct. The delimitation issue will be finalised by the end of next week,” Sanaullah said.
In the new draft code, Section 91(uma) of the Representation of the People Order, 1972 has been added.
“This was not included in the previous codes. Now, a candidate’s nomination can be cancelled if they are found guilty of serious crimes,” he said.
The commission also decided to ban the use of posters in election campaigns.
