In a post on its official Facebook, the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing stated that controversial ‘Rights and Risks Analysis Group’ (RRAG) – a New Delhi-based organisation– released a false report on June 6, 2025 alleging a wave of politically-motivated killings in Bangladesh. According to RRAG’s press release, “at least 123 members of the Awami League and its affiliate organisations… were victims of targeted murder under the regime of Dr Muhammad Yunus from August 5, 2024 to April 30, 2025”. RRAG framed these killings as revenge attacks by supporters of Dr Yunus.

RRAG also falsely claimed that the Interim government has restricted the OHCHR to “conduct an independent fact-finding inquiry into alleged human rights violations.”

However, most of the claims mentioned in PRAG Press Release are misleading and not supported by on-the-ground facts.

In support of its accusations, RRAG cited specific cases of alleged targeted murders. But a close examination of cited case reveals that ordinary criminal or localized motives – not targeted political assassinations. Key details reported by local media and authorities directly contradict RRAG’s narrative, as explained below.

Nachol Double Murder (Dec 17, 2024) – RRAG claimed two youths, Masud and Rian, were killed by Yunus supporters for writing “Joy Bangla”. In reality, this was a local feud unrelated to politics. The victims’ family publicly refuted the political narrative, clarifying that the boys had “no involvement in Chhatra League” and were killed due to a clash between two neighborhood teenage groups. The victim’s father said the claims of political motive “completely fabricated”.

Murder of Arina Begum (Dec 5, 2024) – RRAG alleged that Arina, a 45-year-old mother, was hacked to death “just because her son was the local BCL president and in hiding.” Evidence points instead to a personal motive. After the killing, police quickly arrested her husband as the prime suspect. Investigators and local residents suspect an extramarital affair was behind the murder, not politics.

Death of Tofazzal (Sep 19, 2024) – RRAG claimed Tofazzal, a union-level Chhatra League leader from Barguna, was lynched by a student mob at DU in a politically motivated attack. However, this omits crucial context. Tofazzal was mentally ill and unaffiliated with any confrontation on campus. On the night of Sep 18, DU students at Fazlul Huq Hall mistook him for a thief, detained him, and beat him fatally when he gave incoherent responses. His identity was discovered posthumously – he had long suffered from mental illness and often wandered DU’s campus. This was not a targeted political murder at all. It was a tragic mob injustice by students (ironically, some of them reportedly BCL members themselves) who falsely labeled him a thief.

Beating Death of Abdullah Al Masud (Sep 8, 2024) – RRAG implied Masud, a disabled former BCL leader, was targeted despite being politically inactive. Yes, he was beaten to death by a mob in Rajshahi amid post-uprising tensions. The 35-year-old went to buy medicine for his newborn when locals accused him—wrongly—of attacking protesters on August 5. Though he had no charges against him, the mob fatally beat him.

Murder of Babar Ali in Bogura (Aug 13, 2024) – RRAG described Babar Ali (50s) as an Awami League activists who was abducted from his home and had his throat slit. This did occur – but local evidence indicates a personal vendetta, not a political hit job. Babar Ali was a small grocery shop owner in Bogura town. On Aug 13, several young men called him outside and took him away; by next morning his body was found. The victim’s daughter, Bina Akter, testified that her father had a long-running feud with some local individuals over his grocery business, and she “strongly believes they killed him because of that dispute”. Police also indicated past enmity was the likely motive and launched an investigation to identify the culprits.

It should be noted that this response pertains solely to the individual cases highlighted in the PRAG press release. A comprehensive analysis of the full report is currently in progress and will be released in due courses.

RRAG falsely claimed the interim government restricted the UN’s human rights investigation. In reality, Dr. Muhammad Yunus formally invited OHCHR on August 30, 2024, and fully cooperated. The February 2025 OHCHR report accused the previous government, under Sheikh Hasina, of ordering deadly crackdowns that killed up to 1,400 people. Contrary to RRAG’s claim, the report does not state that most victims were Awami League supporters, nor that relatives were silenced by fear. Fact-checkers confirmed RRAG’s claim of “750 AL deaths” is based on a fabricated UN list. The 144-name list submitted by AL was noted but not verified by the UN. RRAG distorted these facts to push a false narrative of persecution.

However, such misleading report by PRAG is nothing new. RRAG and its director Suhas Chakma have past of spreading anti Bangladesh disinformation favoring the fallen Awami League. In May 2025, RRAG falsely claimed 640 journalists were targeted; the government refuted this as misleading, clarifying that legal actions were mostly linked to laws enacted under the former regime and that no systemic media repression exists.

In another case, RRAG exaggerated casualties in Chittagong Hill Tracts clashes—claiming 9 indigenous deaths, which an allied group inflated to 67—while credible reports confirmed only 4, as shown in DismisLab’s “From Four to a Hundred”.

RRAG’s claims of a systematic killing campaign against Awami League members don’t hold up to the facts.
