Burglars tried to break into the Barcelona home of Spain star Lamine Yamal on Wednesday, only hours after he helped his country reach the FIFA World Cup final, according to police and local media.
Catalan regional police confirmed that there was an attempted burglary at a house in Esplugues de Llobregat, a town on the outskirts of Barcelona.
“There was an attempted burglary at a home in Esplugues de Llobregat,” a police spokesperson told AFP.
The police did not identify the owner of the property for privacy reasons. However, Barcelona based newspaper La Vanguardia reported that the house belongs to the 19 year old Spain forward.
According to the report, two men wearing balaclavas climbed over the wall surrounding the property. They were spotted by private security guards before they could enter the house and quickly fled the scene.
La Vanguardia also reported that the property was once owned by former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique and Colombian singer Shakira when they lived together in the city.
The attempted break in happened early on Wednesday morning, shortly after Spain secured a 2-0 win over France in Texas to book their place in the World Cup final.
Yamal played an important role in the victory. He won the first half penalty that Mikel Oyarzabal converted to give Spain the lead.
The incident adds Yamal to a growing list of football stars whose homes have been targeted by burglars. In recent years, Real Madrid players Karim Benzema, Rodrygo and Dani Carvajal have also been victims of break ins at their homes.
