Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam Bulbul has confirmed that he will stand for the position of director in the upcoming board elections, scheduled for early October.

On 2 September, following an inspection of the Sylhet District Stadium, Bulbul revealed his decision to the media, saying his motivation stems from a desire to contribute more significantly to the country’s cricket.

“For the sake of the nation, I want to continue working in cricket,” Bulbul said. “Inshallah, we will hold the elections in the first week of October. We will ensure a fair election. Here, the president is not directly elected – it is the directors who are chosen. That is the first objective, and I will try to be there.”

For the past three months, Bulbul has been serving as BCB president through a nomination from the National Sports Council. However, he now intends to secure a formal position on the board through direct election.

“I still haven’t discussed anything with the NSC yet. I only expressed my wish to participate, if possible. The only reason is, the projects we started are going really well. I don’t want to leave those half done. I want to take those forward. That’s why I want to participate,” he added.

Bulbul also referred to his earlier hesitation about contesting the elections: “I talked about a T20 innings, yes, but that’s not over yet. If I am to continue, I may have to switch to 50-over mode. More importantly, I have decided to continue to take the projects to the next stage.”

The announcement follows a board meeting held on 1 September at a Sylhet five-star hotel, where the upcoming elections, the Dhaka League, and issues surrounding the BPL fixing scandal were discussed. It was confirmed that the election will take place in the first week of October.

According to Article 15.1 of the BCB constitution, the executive committee serves a four-year term beginning from its first meeting. The last election was held on 6 October 2021, with the newly elected board meeting the following day. By constitutional requirement, the current executive committee must complete the next election by 7 October 2025.

Bulbul, a former Bangladesh opener, had previously suggested that he might not seek election, saying he had only intended to play a short “T20-style innings” as BCB president rather than a long “Test match”. He had also expressed that his initial tenure as president was an unexpected responsibility after leaving his ICC role to serve the country.

Regarding Tamim Iqbal’s potential participation in the presidential race, Bulbul said: “I haven’t talked with him yet. But I will have my respect and help since we’ve all come here to work for cricket.”
