Former national captain Aminul Islam Bulbul has become the new president of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), just a day after Faruque Ahmed was removed from his position.
BCB at a board meeting, elected the new president on Friday afternoon. The first Test centurion for Bangladesh, Bulbul, becomes the 18th BCB president replacing Faruque Ahmed, who has been embroiled in controversies and lost the board’s confidence in just nine months.
Nazmul Abedin Fahin has become the new senior vice president and Fahim Sinha as vice president.
Earlier, Bulbul confirmed that he is willing to take on the role for a short period. “Yes, the National Sports Council (NSC) has offered me this responsibility. I spoke to the ICC first, and they had no objections. So, I will take up the role for a brief time before returning to the ICC,” he said, who currently serves as a Senior Development Officer at the International Cricket Council.
This leadership change follows a dramatic vote of no confidence against outgoing BCB President Faruq Ahmed. On May 28, eight out of nine BCB directors submitted a letter of no confidence against Faruq. Later that afternoon, the NSC officially removed him from his position as a board director, which automatically ended his tenure as president.
Faruq, however, was reluctant to resign. Speaking on Tuesday, he said, “I am not thinking about resigning. No one has clearly told me what I did wrong.” He added, “I was elected. I have a right to know what mistake I made.”
Despite Faruq’s objections, both the NSC and BCB moved swiftly to resolve the leadership crisis. With Bulbul stepping into the role, many hope his experienced and widely respected presence will restore stability to the board at least until the next official BCB election, scheduled for October.
Bulbul has stated that he will return to his ICC role once this temporary assignment is completed.
Analysts believe that today’s meeting will mark the beginning of a new chapter in BCB leadership, putting an end to two days of turbulence in Bangladesh cricket.
Earlier Aminul Islam has been appointed as a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) under the nominated category, following a directive from the National Sports Council (NSC).
