Tensions ran high throughout the night at Kochakata border in Kurigram’s Nageshwari upazila as the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) attempted a push-in operation. Thousands of local residents formed a human chain along nearly one kilometer of the border area and maintained vigil overnight to prevent the intrusion. Simultaneously, BGB and Ansar-VDP personnel took a firm stance to resist the push-in attempt.
The incident occurred on Friday night at Shobharkuti and Shiparhat border areas under Kedar Union of Kochakata Police Station.
Local sources reported that at around 7pm on Friday, BSF members from Golkganj Police Station in Assam’s Dhubri district gathered 50-60 civilians in two pickup vans near the Indian village of Phaiskarkuti, adjacent to the Bangladesh border, intending to push them into Bangladeshi territory. Later, the BSF switched off all lights in the border village and attempted the push-in under cover of darkness.
As news spread, hundreds of locals rushed to the border and set up vigil. Subsequently, teams from BGB’s Kochakata and Kedar camps, along with Ansar-VDP units, reinforced their positions at the border.
Meanwhile, the BSF also took positions on the Indian side. Around 2am, the BSF advanced toward the zero line but retreated after BGB refused multiple attempts at communication. By 3am, the BSF withdrew from the zero line.
Lt Col Mahabubul Haque, commanding officer of BGB Kurigram-22 Battalion, confirmed the incident, stating, “BGB, Ansar members, and local residents are jointly guarding the border to prevent any illegal push-in attempts by BSF. Patrols have been intensified along the border.”
