Dewald Brevis has stormed into the record books with a breathtaking century against Australia in the second T20I at Darwin’s Marrara Cricket Ground on Tuesday, August 12.
The 22-year-old South African sensation hammered a 41-ball hundred — the fastest ever by any batter against Australia in T20 internationals. Brevis broke the previous record held by New Zealand’s Martin Guptill, who had reached three figures off 49 balls.
Brevis also became the first cricketer to score a century in a T20I between Australia and South Africa, further underlining his growing stature in international cricket.
Brevis’ ton now stands as the second-fastest ever by a South African in T20Is. He leapfrogged Quinton de Kock, who had reached a century in 43 balls against the West Indies in 2023. Only David Miller’s 35-ball blitz against Bangladesh in 2017 ranks above him.
Fastest T20I centuries for South Africa:
-
David Miller – 35 balls vs Bangladesh (2017)
-
Dewald Brevis – 41 balls vs Australia (2025)
-
Quinton de Kock – 43 balls vs West Indies (2023)
-
Richard Levi – 45 balls vs New Zealand (2012)
-
Faf du Plessis – 46 balls vs West Indies (2015)
At just 22 years and 105 days, Brevis has also become the youngest South African to score a century in the format, surpassing Richard Levi, who was 24 years and 36 days old when he hit a ton against New Zealand in 2012.
Coming in at No. 4 after Australia opted to bowl first, Brevis started positively with a boundary off his third delivery. He found his rhythm by the seventh over and unleashed a brutal assault in the 12th, taking 23 runs off five deliveries from Glenn Maxwell. His aggressive intent and flawless ball-striking left the Australian attack reeling.
Brevis’ milestone innings not only etched his name in the records but also reaffirmed his status as one of the brightest young talents in world cricket.
