Brazil retained their Women’s Copa America title after a thrilling 5-4 penalty shootout win over Colombia in Quito on Saturday, claiming their ninth continental crown in a match packed with goals and drama.

The final at Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado swung back and forth from the first whistle. Colombia took the lead three times in regular time, but Brazil found a way to respond on each occasion. Veteran star Marta was the difference-maker, forcing extra time with a stunning strike deep into stoppage time before adding another goal in the 105th minute.

Colombia, however, refused to give in. Just 10 minutes later, Leicy Santos curled in a superb free-kick to make it 4-4 and send the contest to a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Colombia went ahead early when Angelina missed for Brazil. But momentum shifted after Manuela Pavi failed to convert and goalkeeper Lorena denied Santos. Brazil held their nerve from the spot to seal the title once again.

“This means a lot. We have that mentality of never giving up. It’s a source of pride for Brazil,” said Amanda Gutierres after the win.

The victory marks a remarkable night for women’s football in South America, with both sides delivering a final that will be remembered for years.
