The Bangladesh Police Service Association has strongly condemned and protested against recent threatening remarks made by former VP of Dhaka University and Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, where he threatened to “beat and hang police officers.” A video of his statement from a recent human chain protest went viral on social media.
In a statement issued on Saturday, signed by Association President Dr Md. Nazmul Karim Khan (Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police) and Secretary General Md Anisuzzaman (Superintendent of Dhaka District Police), the organisation denounced Nur’s comments as criminal offenses against police personnel.
The statement referenced Nur’s May 22 speech at a public gathering: “If the police of this interim government lay hands on us—we won’t leave those hands intact. Let me be clear—just as people beat and hung police from a bridge in Jatrabari, if any Gono Odhikar Parishad member is touched, we’ll hang them the same way.”
The Association asserted that such threats against Bangladesh Police are “unacceptable and constitute criminal behavior.” While welcoming constructive criticism, it rejected “indecent remarks from political leaders targeting state institutions.”
The notice highlighted that Bangladesh Police has worked tirelessly to maintain peace and public trust since the transformative events of August 5. The Association suspects these remarks aim to “demoralise the force and weaken its resolve for vested interests.”
It warned that such “criminal and disorderly statements” risk spreading hatred and undermining social harmony in democratic Bangladesh.
