The BNP is set to file lawsuits against former chief election commissioners and other commissioners who oversaw the 10th, 11th, and 12th national elections.
According to UNB, BNP Media Cell member Shairul Kabir Khan stated that a three-member BNP delegation, led by BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, will file the case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on Sunday morning.
He said the BNP delegation will first submit a copy of the complaint to the Election Commission office at 10 am, and then proceed to the police station to file the case.
Shairul added that the lawsuits will be filed against those responsible for conducting the past three national elections, which the BNP has long claimed were rigged, flawed, and unjust.
Earlier, on June 16, at a meeting of the National Consensus Commission held at state guesthouse Jamuna, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus instructed the immediate formation of a committee to investigate the roles of former CECs, election commissioners, and officials of the EC Secretariat involved in organising controversial elections.
The BNP has alleged that the Election Commission assisted the Awami League in conducting one-sided elections in 2014, 2018, and 2024. They also claim that the commission ignored opposition demands for a neutral caretaker government and the deployment of the military with magistracy powers during elections.
The 10th national election, held in January 2014, was boycotted by the BNP and most other opposition parties. More than half of the 300 constituencies were won uncontested, raising questions about the fairness of the election. At that time, the commission was led by CEC Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad.
During the 11th national election in December 2018, the BNP and other opposition parties alleged that ballot boxes were filled the night before polling day. That election was overseen by CEC KM Nurul Huda.
The BNP also rejected the 12th national election of 2024, which the party did not participate in, calling it a “dummy election.” That commission was headed by CEC Kazi Habibul Awal.
