BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was not formed through privilege or convenience, but through a long history of struggle and sacrifice.
“We are not a party that flew in and took position overnight,” Fakhrul said. “We fought hard to reach where we are today. Those who were either recently formed or who once opposed the idea of Bangladesh’s independence now feel entitled to criticise BNP.”
Speaking at the triennial conference of Kishoreganj district BNP, Fakhrul added that repeated attempts were made to dismantle the party, yet BNP rose again like a phoenix.
“BNP has never bowed down. Those who tried to destroy us through abductions, killings, and conspiracies have now fled the country,” he stated. “Tarique Rahman will carry forward the legacy of Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia to rebuild Bangladesh.”
Fakhrul stated, “The democracy everyone talks about today was initiated by the martyred president Ziaur Rahman, who also laid the foundation of modern Bangladesh.”
“During the 1/11 political crisis, the leader who was exiled after facing severe repression has once again inspired a vision for democracy. Now is the time to entrust Tarique Rahman with the responsibility of leading the country”, he said.
Describing the event as more than just a political gathering, Fakhrul said, “This is not just an ordinary conference. After 15 years of sacrifices by countless BNP leaders and activists, we now have an opportunity — and we must seize it.”
The long-awaited conference began with the national anthem and flag hoisting, marking the first such event in nine years. From early morning, thousands of BNP supporters from various upazilas of the district gathered at the local stadium, creating a festive and energised atmosphere.
The conference was presided over by Shariful Alam, president of the Kishoreganj District BNP, and conducted by Mazharul Islam, the district’s general secretary.
Among the attendees were BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Abdus Salam, Joint Secretary General Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel and Emran Saleh Prince.
