“Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is ready to sign the July Charter at any time,” said Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the party’s standing committee, reaffirming the party’s commitment to the core demands of the movement.
Speaking at a press conference at his residence in Gulshan on Monday, Salahuddin stated that BNP had responded to the charter with certain amendments as early as July 30.
“BNP has provided its feedback after receiving the charter and has offered its utmost cooperation in implementing it,” he said.
Addressing the political and historical significance of the July Declaration, Salahuddin emphasized that BNP had responded to the proposals made in the charter back in February. He expressed disagreement with attempts to frame March 26 in a particular narrative and suggested that official and constitutional recognition be granted through the Fourth Schedule.
Salahuddin further clarified that if the proposed amendments by BNP are not incorporated into the final version of the charter, the party will officially respond after the charter is read out.
Refuting claims of BNP’s reluctance to cooperate on the charter’s implementation, he said, “BNP has extended its highest level of cooperation. Some have accused us of withholding signatures until assurances are given, but the party’s position remains clear and constructive.”
Concluding his statement, Salahuddin called on all democratic forces to stay united against fascism and continue to uphold the spirit of the July uprising.
