A local leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was shot to death by some unidentified assailants in Dohar upazila of Dhaka early Wednesday morning.
The deceased Harun-ur-Rashid alias Harun Master (65) was the former president of Nayabari Union unit BNP. He was the son of Siraj Uddin of Bahra village of the union.
According to the deceased’s family, Harun, as a daily routine, went out for a morning walk after Fajar prayer . The incident took place at around 6am near Bahra School when three youths came and fired bullets indiscriminately and left the scene.
After hearing the gun shot, locals rushed to the spot and rescued Harun and took him to the Dohar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead. Dr Nusrat Tarin of the health complex said the body bore six bullet wounds including the head, neck, and torso.
Locals said there was a dispute between the two factions of BNP in the area over establishing supremacy. Harun also protested the activities of some of the party members and faced protest. Besides, Harun had a dispute with a group over sand business in the area, they added.
Md Hasan Ali, officer-in-charge Dohar Police station, said they are investigating the murder incident whether there is a political motive or not.
A tense situation has been prevailing in the area after the incident.
