The BNP-backed ‘Blue Panel’ has secured a resounding victory in the Supreme Court Bar Association elections for the 2026-2027 session, winning 13 out of 14 executive posts, including those of the President and Secretary.
The official results were announced at 2 am on Friday by Justice Md Miftah Uddin Choudhury, the head of the election sub-committee. The polling process was conducted over two days, on Wednesday and Thursday.
AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon was elected as the President, while Mohammad Ali secured the position of Secretary, both representing the Blue Panel.
Other successful candidates from the same panel include Md Magfur Rahman Sheikh and Md Shahjahan, who were elected as Vice-Presidents, and Md Ziaur Rahman, who won the post of Treasurer. Mohammad Shamsul Islam Mukul and Maksud Ullah were elected as Assistant Secretaries.
The six members elected from the Blue Panel are AKM Amjad Hossain, HM Sanjid Siddiqui, Md Kabir Hossain, Md Tipu Sultan, Md Zia Uddin Mia, and Wahida Afroz Chowdhury.
The only position not claimed by the Blue Panel went to the Jamaat-backed ‘Lawyer Unity Panel’, with Azim Uddin Patwary being elected as the sole member from that group.
A total of 4,048 votes were cast out of 11,097 eligible voters. Forty candidates competed for the 14 available positions. Despite the participation of the Blue Panel, the Lawyer Unity Panel, the NCP-backed ‘Red-Green Panel’, and several independent candidates, the Red-Green Panel and independent contenders failed to secure any seats.
Notably, supporters of the Awami League were unable to contest the elections. This follows a decision by the association’s special general meeting to exclude them, as their activities are currently banned under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
