BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the biggest challenge before the party is to provide full cooperation to ensure a free and fair election in February next year.
He made the remarks on Monday while placing a wreath at the grave of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman on the party’s 47th founding anniversary.
Speaking about BNP’s future goals, Fakhrul said, “The party has fully supported the reform proposals that have come forward.
“If BNP gains popular support and is entrusted with running the government, under the leadership of our leader Tarique Rahman, BNP will ensure both political change and economic growth. BNP will take Bangladesh further ahead.”
He added, “Many attempts have been made to destroy BNP, but the party has revived repeatedly like the Phoenix bird and has travelled a long path in the struggle to restore democracy.”
“BNP is fighting for democracy and has faced repeated efforts to be destroyed. But each time, under the ideals of Ziaur Rahman and the leadership of Khaleda Zia, the party has resurrected.”
Fakhrul further said, “Today is not only important for BNP but also extremely significant for the people of the country, because the vision shown by the martyr President Ziaur Rahman is undeniable to all.”
Highlighting the importance of the party’s founding, Fakhrul said, “BNP has brought fundamental changes in the country’s politics and economy. Ziaur Rahman established multi-party democracy from a one-party rule.”
He added, “BNP’s core ideology is Bangladeshi nationalism, and Ziaur Rahman ensured political change by guaranteeing freedom of the media, fundamental human rights, and the independence of the judiciary.
“At the same time, he introduced a free-market economy, which has brought about a profound economic transformation in the country.”
Referring to BNP’s long struggle over the past 15 years, Fakhrul said, “During this period, under the leadership of our acting chairman Tarique Rahman, BNP has faced many challenges.
“Nearly 6 million false cases have been filed against BNP leaders and activists, more than 20,000 leaders and activists have been killed, and 1,700 have been forcibly disappeared. But by the grace of Allah and through the movement of students and the people, we have been freed from that dreadful fascism.”
