BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stated that the party is not in favour of banning any political party.
He added, “BNP has never been in favor of banning any political party. Is coming to the streets the only solution? BNP has always sought solutions through dialogue and will continue to emphasize this approach in the future.”
He made these remarks on Thursday after returning from Singapore, while speaking to reporters.
Fakhrul emphasised, “BNP is the largest political party in the country – there is no doubt about that. Since August 5, BNP has not taken to the streets over any issue. The party is working to resolve the crisis through discussions.
“I believe that everything will be resolved through dialogue because BNP always values peaceful conversations.”
He also made it clear that BNP is not in favor of the Proportional Representation (PR) system, stating that there is no need for PR in the context of Bangladesh.
Regarding the ongoing discussions on the July Accord, Fakhrul noted that BNP has agreed on several points.
“By bringing those issues to the forefront, we can find a way to resolve them. Any arrangement must have the support of the people because only an elected parliament can amend the constitution, and therein lies the permanent solution,” he added.
Fakhrul further stated, “BNP has never been in favor of banning any political party, and that stance remains unchanged.”
On his upcoming visit to the United Nations, he said that he has not yet spoken with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus about the matter. As a result, it is still unclear what role BNP will play during the visit.
However, he expressed hope that discussions will focus on the country’s situation, the advancement of democracy, and development issues.
Fakhrul concluded, “The country must make its own decisions in a united manner. Issuing street programs without dialogue creates unnecessary pressure, which is not good for democracy.”
