Bangladesh Maritime University (BMU) celebrated World Oceans Day 2025 with a seminar at Shaheed Moazzem Hall, Mirpur-14, focusing on this year’s theme: “Sustaining What Sustains Us.”
Rear Admiral Dr. Khandakar Akhter Hossain, Vice-Chancellor of BMU, attended the event as Chief Guest. In his address, he emphasized the need for producing skilled maritime professionals, advancing research, fostering international collaboration, and applying modern technologies for ocean sustainability and economic development.
The seminar began with a welcome speech from Commodore Sheikh Shahid Ahmed, Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Ocean Sciences. The keynote was delivered by Commodore Syed Misbah Uddin Ahmad (Retd), Director General of the Bangladesh Institute of Maritime Research and Development (BIMRAD), who stressed the importance of sustainable ocean practices and innovation.
Professor Dr. Mohammad Nazir Hossain of the Department of Genetic Engineering and Marine Biotechnology highlighted the role of marine biotechnology in ocean conservation. Two students, Ihsanul Haque and Fazla Ruhan Nuhas, presented scientific papers on ocean-related research.
A quiz competition was also held, and the Vice-Chancellor distributed prizes to winners and mementos to guest speakers.
The seminar explored diverse topics such as deep-sea fishing, ocean pollution, marine energy, maritime education, tourism, and international cooperation. Faculty, staff, and students actively participated in the event.
The celebration reaffirmed BMU’s dedication to maritime excellence, sustainable ocean use, and contributing to national and global maritime goals.
