Bangladesh Maritime University (BMU) is steering the country toward unlocking its vast maritime potential, playing a pivotal role in the growth of the blue economy.
The university, established in 2013, is focused on equipping the nation’s future leaders with the skills necessary to navigate and utilize the nation’s maritime resources, contributing to economic prosperity and sustainable growth.
Located in Dhaka’s Pallabi area, BMU offers specialized programs in Oceanography, Hydrography, Naval Architecture, Offshore Engineering, Maritime Law, and more, all aimed at addressing the evolving demands of Bangladesh’s maritime sector, according to a press statement.
The university is uniquely positioned to capitalize on the country’s maritime assets, which include vast fisheries, oil, gas, minerals, and renewable energy resources.
Bangladesh’s maritime sector holds enormous promise, with over 118,000 square kilometers of sea area and access to a 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone. BMU is actively contributing to the country’s efforts to explore and utilize these resources for national development. The university fosters collaboration with government bodies like the Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute (BORI), Bangladesh Navy, and the Coast Guard, ensuring its research and academic endeavors are deeply connected with real-world needs.
BMU’s mission goes beyond education. Through initiatives like the Business Incubator Start-up Blue, the university is empowering students to transform innovative ideas into viable business solutions, further driving the growth of the maritime sector. These efforts are designed to foster entrepreneurship, creating a thriving ecosystem for maritime innovation in Bangladesh.
In addition to local partnerships, BMU has developed strong international collaborations with over 25 global maritime institutions, including those in the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and Australia. These partnerships allow for knowledge exchange, research collaboration, and access to cutting-edge technologies in maritime education.
The university is also investing in its future with a state-of-the-art permanent campus under construction in Hamidchar, Chattogram. Expected to open in 2026, this campus will offer world-class facilities for both academic and practical training, ensuring that students have access to the best resources for their education. It will also provide housing for up to 95% of students, fostering an immersive academic experience.
BMU is preparing students not only with academic knowledge but also with expertise in emerging technologies like AI, robotics, and drones, all of which will play an essential role in the future of the maritime sector. As Bangladesh moves towards a more sustainable and technology-driven blue economy, BMU is positioned to lead the way in preparing the nation’s workforce for a prosperous maritime future.
